Network Cable Tester Review
Consider a little CMOS counter driven by a 9V battery which strobes the lines in sequence, trying to put 5 mA down 1 of eight lines. Does this for all eight lines, one at a time, over and over. There is a little LED on each output. Then consider the remote, which again is just a bunch of LED's and diodes, such that if any line is driven, the corresponding LED lights and the current is returned via the remaining lines.
Simple little thing.
Darned handy to have if you wonder if your cable has a broken wire, or maybe you trying to use a "reverse" cable" Try one of each so you will recognize the bit patterns on the remote.
This device only checks continuity, not pairing. If some "doofus" didn't know that it is critical that the communication link consists of four PAIRS, and pays no attention to which wire is twisted with which wire, the cable will show continuity but will work poorly, if at all, due to magnetically coupled intermixing of signal along the cable. The wires are twisted in the cable for a reason: each signal has a + and -, and when twisted with each other - the net magnetic field of the pair is exactly cancelled, whether it be incoming or outgoing.
So, if you want to make sure that connector you just put on the cable has continuity, this is a handy little tool that will tell you that in a jiffy. Of course, you could also use your VOM, but have a good time trying to keep your test prods on the correct pin.
I bought mine for around $2, and in my estimation, well worth it for the frustration I can avoid when troubleshooting why two boxes don't seem to see each other.
