Several reviews indicate users obtaining very mixed results with this (and similar) accessory cables. In many instances of reported unreliable behavior, those issues may have been due to users' not understanding that any "ACTIVE" USB extension cable needs to be connected to a high-power USB port on a computer or USB hub, in order to perform reliably. These "ACTIVE" cables must draw power from that USB port to operate an embedded "Active" circuit built into the cable -- which improves the speed & reliability of data transfers over long cable lengths; in addition, the extension cable may also need to pass-thru power to a USB device at the remote cable end. As a result, employing one of these Active cables properly entails knowing something about the electrical characteristics of the devices which will be connected at BOTH ends of the cable, to ensure that sufficient power (current) is available to supply the needs of the cable AND the device connected at the far-end. Unfortunately, Amazon's descriptions provided for this & similar USB "Active" extension cables fail to point-out that they will only work reliably when connected to a high-power USB port, and thus -- are likely contributing to some of the disappointing results reported by unhappy purchasers...If your experiencing difficulty with an already purchased an Active USB extension cable, try connecting it to other USB ports on your computer or add a POWERED USB hub (one that uses an AC adapter) between the Active cable & your computer's USB port. On the other hand, if you're still shopping for a USB extension cable, you might also consider purchasing a shorter (less-than 15 feet) "dumb" cable, which won't require extra power to operate properly! However, don't be tempted to "cheat" by stringing-together shorter length USB cables; if the TOTAL USB cable length between your computer & the remote device is 15 feet or more, you'll likely need to use either an "Active" extension cable or a powered USB hub somewhere near the mid-point of the total cable length.
A few reviewers also reported that the connectors on the cable ends seemed "loose" and detached too easily. Actually, type "A" USB connectors are designed to pull-apart without much difficulty, to increase the number of times they can be connected/disconnected reliably & to minimize possible damage to connected devices if the cable is accidentally tugged. The down side is that long USB cables may need to be supported close to each end, to prevent the weight of the cable from causing the connections to separate or fail. (A common issue with ethernet cables too...)
Bonne chance!
