There are reviews that say this will get tangled and lose the retracting mechanism and I can certainly see how that can happen. I held the center piece while pulling one connector and it quickly bound up. It didn't take much to undo what I did: just pull the other connector out and retract them back in. However, it does feel delicate and I'll be careful about ever pulling it out to it's full length. Nonetheless, it should work well for what I need.
