I got this to use it with the new version of Sony HDRCX580V High Definition Handycam 20.4 MP Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom and 32 GB Embedded Memory (2012 Model) and I can tell you it works! with a USB stick and I was able to transfer the contents of the embedded 32GB memory on HDRCX580V camcorder without using a PC.

There are some electronics in this USB adapter (It is not a dummy cable for sure) that enables 'HOST mode' operation on the camcorder that lets you transfer the files present in the camcorder's internal embedded memory to an externally attached HDD. The Camcorder's firmware detects that presence of this adapter and prompts you to take action like copy files, move files etc; But I have a fear that NTFS formatted HDDs are not supported?

When I attached a Western Digital My Passport 1 TB (Black) it prompted me to format the drive! which I did not as there were existing files on it. After that I just used a regular SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 32GB USB Flash Drive (SDCZ33-032G-B35) (FAT32 formatted) which it recognized without any issues.

FYI - When you do connect this adapter and use it with Sony HDRCX580V High Definition Handycam (2012 Model), the camcorder prompts you to connect the AC power adapter before enabling the Sony VMCUAM1 USB Adapter Cable

If you are not in a position to have AC power to your camcorder you may not be able to transfer files. That is one reason for losing a star.

Otherwise it gets the job done and I rate this with 4 stars!
