I haven't done network installation in a long time, but I was reasonably confident that I could terminate some cat-5 in my own home correctly. Unfortunately the RJ-45 jacks that I bought were badly labeled. To fix my problems I bought this little gem of a tester based on the existing reviews and because it was inexpensive. I wasn't expecting a lot-- really just the ability to get the cable pairs sorted out and that's what I got. Within 10 minutes of receiving this tester I had everything sorted and tested end-to-end. When I was employed doing network installs 15 years ago I had one of these that cost about $100. Sure it was a little sturdier, but the basic functionality was the same. If you're doing network installs for a living you might want something a little fancier, but this thing does work! I'm glad to have it in my toolbox and for $4 you can't beat it.

The functionality is quite simple. There are two ports for, one for RJ-11 (telephone) and RJ-45 (ethernet). You plug the sender unit (the bigger part) into one end of the connection and turn it on. Then you go to the other end and plug in the receiver unit (the little one)**. The lights will flash in sequence with a short pause after the 8th wire. If the they aren't flashing in sequence on the receiver then you know your cable's got pairs mixed up. You can also use the sequence to figure out what the correct order of the wires should be. The power switch on the sender lets you pick between two speeds for the flashing sequence.

** A word of warning, I don't know how tolerant modern network equipment is, but back in the day some of us learned the hard way that you HAVE to unplug the receiving end from any hubs, switches, routers, or computers before turning the sending unit on. Since these things send a little more voltage than network equipment expects you can burn out the port on your sensitive network gear. It's not a big deal, just don't leave the other end plugged into to anything but the tester's receiver unit.

My only other note is, you'll need a single 9 volt battery. Happy testing!
