Until now, I've managed to consistently avoid buying/using a usb type console cable for Cisco devices; however, upon inspecting some newly purchased 3750X switches, I found that they had finally put a console port on the FRONT of their devices and that I would no longer have to find a way to plug in a console cable when a device is mounted up against a wall in an IDF. This new port is a 5-pin Mini-USB port which works with this type of cable. In order to work, this cable requires that you download the driver software from Cisco's website. You simply browse to the support for the device you own/use and look for available software downloads. Next, you go through the Setup wizard and the install finishes and prompts for a restart.
****Note: For 64bit Windows 7, I had to go to "Device Manager" after restarting and select the device with driver issues, then browse for available drivers on my local computer, and select the Cisco usb console driver manually.**** I'm not sure if Cisco just fails at creating an installation program for Windows 7 64bit, or if it's a common occurrence for all Windows installations.
All in all, the cable works well after driver installation and even seems to have a slightly faster response than the typical serial console cables. Very pleased with the purchase.
