IDEAL 85-366 CAT 6 Modular Plug 85-366 Cable Adapters85-366 CAT 6 Modular Plug Review
This is a three piece part which I believe works well and takes the guesswork out of guiding the individual wires into the correct slots. There is some technique needed to get optimal results that is not clear from the instructions. The first part is the Sled. This is a figure 8 shaped part where each of the four twisted wire pairs slides into. The second part is the Liner. This is a flat rectangular tubular part with 8 small slots for each of the individual wires. The final part is the Plug Body which is the main unit that ultimately plugs into your jack.Step 1 is to first strip the outer jacket, separate the four pairs and snip out the cross member. A word of caution: the jacket stripper of most tools does not work well and can nick the insulation of the wires underneath. Best to just score the jacket then bend it to break and free the jacket. Better yet, many cables come with a string in the bundle. It's purpose is to pull down and safely split the jacket which can then be cut off; this is the preferred foolproof method if the string is available.
Next put the four twisted wire pairs into the Sled. The pairs should remain twisted as they pass through the Sled. This allows the twist to go as far as possible to the termination point, optimizing performance. After the Sled is installed, untwist and straighten the pairs. Next order your wires per your preferred standard, line them up parallel and insert them into the Liner. Make sure the ramp part of the liner is in the correct orientation to have the wires ordered in the Plug Body correctly. Examine the Plug Body and you will see the Liner only fits in one way. Important: The Sled and Liner do not need (or want to) butt up against one another. Indeed if you try and do so the twist will bow out the Liner and it will squish the insulation when the Liner is inserted into the Plug Body. Straighten the wires out as much as possible up to the twist and put the liner as close as possible without bowing the Liner. Don't snip the wires yet.
Before inserting the assembly into the Plug Body massage the twists in the center two slots of the Sled to get them as flat as possible. This will prevent the insulation from getting damaged when inserted in the Plug Body. I have thick CAT6 cable whose jacket barely fit into the Plug Body. A minor flattening with lineman's pliers flattened it enough to easily insert. Now you can snip the wires flush to the Liner. A flush cut shear works well here. Apply a little pressure evenly across the face of the Liner as you cut. If you do all of this the assembly should easily insert into the Plug Body and the wires should be observed to be flush and even against the inside end of the Body. The end of the jacket should up to and slightly past the raised end of the Plug Body. A magnifier goes a long way in seeing minute details. If the wires are not flush and even, just remove the assembly and correct before crimping. Caution: Cheap crimpers do a poor job. Each of the pins that get's pushed with the crimpers needs to seat squarely in the housing, both across all pins and front to back. Examination with magnification will clearly demonstrate when this works and when it doesn't. I just threw my $7 junk away and ordered the $40 part. I can't say how much better the new one's will work yet.
I give this 5 stars since it seems to be well made, well thought out and the design allows for a quality termination if done correctly. These require a bit more effort than most but I believe will guarantee quality results if assembled correctly.
