eForCity Blk USB 3.0 Y Cable USB 3.0 Micro-B to Standard Male A Review

I have a Toshiba Canvio External HDD that I used as backup and extended space for my Laptop. One day I was in a rush so I carried it in my jacket pocket, the cord was still attached and the plug that goes into the hard drive got bent since I had the cord stuffed into my pocket. That led to problems with the drive connecting intermittently, as if there was a short or loose connection/soldering. I thought the port was damaged. So, I bought a new HDD when I saw one on sale to copy the contents over before the Canvio HDD stopped reading all together.

Being curious, I tried the USB cable that came with the new drive on the Canvio and the drive worked fine, no shorting, "device cannot be recognized" or anything. I then realized it was the cable that was crap, not the HDD's port! I copied data to my new HDD anyway and decided to use the Canvio as the HDD for my Wii U. The drive was able to be read, formatted, and I copied a demo to it, but it would lock up the system when trying to run the demo. The Wii U has USB 2.0 spec ports which doesn't supply enough power via one port to run the USB 3.0 drive properly. Nintendo recommends using a HDD with an external power supply, or using a Y cable for USB powered drives. The Y cable allows the drive to get power from two USB ports.

I looked online for a Y cable and found this one. When it arrived I hooked it up and the drive works perfectly. I recommend this to those looking to use USB powered drives on their Wii U.
